LA Film Critics Reveal Early Winners as 2024 Voting Kicks Off

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association is voting right now. Members are choosing the year's best films and performances. The awards ceremony is happening today in Los Angeles.

This event is a major bellwether for the upcoming Academy Awards. The group's choices often predict Oscar success. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first few category winners have already been announced.

Adolpho Veloso won the first award for Best Cinematography. His work on Train Dreams earned the top honor. Autumn Durald Arkapaw was the runner-up for Sinners.

In other technical categories, Hannah Beachler won for Best Production Design. She was recognized for her work on Sinners. The Best Editing award went to Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme.

The award for Best Animation went to Little Amélie or the Character of Rain. KPop Demon Hunters was named the runner-up. Winners for the top prizes like Best Picture are still being decided.

The association pre-announced a major career award. Filmmaker Philip Kaufman will receive the Career Achievement Award. LAFCA president Robert Abele praised Kaufman as a versatile iconoclast.

This group's picks carry substantial weight in awards season. Last year's Best Picture winner, Anora, later won the Oscar. The LAFCA has used gender-neutral acting categories for four consecutive years.
