Caleb Williams didn't want to quarterback the Chicago Bears. His father, Carl, did his best to make sure the former USC Trojans passer wasn't taken No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. On Wednesday, Wave's Bomani Jones made a point about Shedeur Sanders' draft wait by comparing it to Williams'.
Sanders, outwardly confident like his father, NFL Hall of Famer and current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, had to wait until the fifth round to hear his name called last month.
"The Williamses were trying to figure out how to break the whole draft! How to skip the whole draft!" Jones said on his podcast, "The Right Time with Bomani Jones." "'We ain't going there. How do we get to Minnesota?' They were absolutely trying to upend things in the ways that you guys believed Shedeur and Deion were trying to upend things, right?"
The Sanders' father-son duo wasn't as staunch in its attempt to land in a certain spot as Williams had been during the cycle before.
"You know how the NFL taught Caleb Williams a lesson? By taking him with the No. 1 overall pick," Jones said. "That's how they did that. That's how they taught him. That's how they learned him, by guaranteeing him tens of millions of dollars. That is how they put him in check.
"So I need you to explain to me once again how it is that the untamable black buck, they showed him by letting him go to the fifth round. All these teams that could use a quarterback. Nope, nope, nope. Not one of them went and got this dude that you swear up and down to me is a can't-miss star. They let him go all the way down to the fifth round of the draft to teach him a lesson. But when it was time to teach Caleb Williams a lesson, they beat his (expletive) with money."
