Second earthquake hits Lancashire as people say 'I thought I was going mad' - Liverpool Echo

Lancashire has been struck by a second earthquake within a fortnight, causing properties to tremble across the region. The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirms that a 2.5-magnitude tremor occurred near Silverdale's coastline during the early hours of this morning (December 19).

People throughout the Morecambe Bay area experienced what they described as "a quick sharp shaking jolt which made a thunder noise" as "the radiators and pictures rattled". This follows a more powerful 3.3-magnitude quake that affected a comparable part of the county earlier this month, reports Lancs Live.

The seismic activity took place three kilometres below Lancashire's surface at 11.23pm on December 4 and was experienced "across the South Lakes and Lancashire, mainly within 20 kilometres of the epicentre, including Lancashire, Kendal and Ulverston".

Posting on social media this morning, BGS announced: "BGS SEISMIC INFORMATION ... SILVERDALE, LANCASHIRE 19 DECEMBER 2025 05:03 UTC 2.5 ML The following preliminary information is available for this earthquake: LAT/LON : 54.161° North / 2.852° West GRID REF : 347 kmE / 474 kmN DEPTH : 2.6 km MAGNITUDE : 2.5Ml".

"Additional Information: Felt around Morecambe Bay area. Reports describe "a quick sharp shaking jolt and made a thunder noise" and "The radiators and pictures rattled".

Locals swiftly turned to social media platforms following the second tremor, with one resident admitting they thought they were "going mad".

Pamela Lloyd said: "Anyone else feel another two small earthquakes? One about 5.04 and another about 5.08? Woke me up but everyone else is still asleep."

Another said: "Yep. Wasn't 'as' loud and didn't shake 'as' much but it woke me from been semi asleep ... One was strange but two in two weeks."

Frida Yapp said: "Yes woke me up by a loud boom and the bedroom window shook came from Silverdale direction I live New Barns Road".

John Aukland said: "Huge bang. Then a smaller one a couple of minutes later."

Victoria Sedgwick said: "Another Earthquake, just after 5am this morning, thought I was going mad. I googled and even Chat GPT."
