Former Sherrard standout Charlotte Frere defends NCAA Division III discus title

GENEVA, Ohio -- Charlotte Frere did it again.

The former Sherrard High School standout and current Augustana College junior won her second straight NCAA Division III discus national championship.

She is Augie's first women's track & field student-athlete to win two national championships.

Indoor and outdoor combined, Frere now owns the fifth national title for the Augustana women's track & field program and the fourth during outdoor season.

She accomplished the repeat on Thursday in rainy and windy conditions at the SPIRE Institute's track & field facility and did it not only with the pressure of defending her title, but leading from her first throw on.

Her winning mark of 48.35-meters (158 feet, 7 inches) actually came on her final throw after she had the title already secured. Her first two throws of 46.69 (153-2) and 46.87 (153-9) gave her three of only five throws past the 150-foot mark in the 22-person field.
