Management of council car parks set to be taken on by leisure centre operator

Management of council car parks set to be taken on by leisure centre operator

The management of two council-owned car parks in Southampton city centre look set to be handed over to a leisure centre operator.

Proposals have been announced for north and south car parks at The Quays.

Council leaders said the sites will continue to be available for public use, with BH Live Active taking over their management as part of the leisure centre's contractual arrangement.

The local authority has launched a four-week traffic regulation order consultation on the plans.

If implemented, all permits and season tickets issued by the council for the two car parks will no longer be valid for use.

The proposals also include allowing blue badge holders to park at all times in the Bagate Street car park following the relocation of shopmobility services.

Cllr Toqeer Kataria, cabinet member for leisure and communities, said: "Should the management of The Quays car parks be transferred to BH Live, it is not expected to have any impact on the number of visitors to the city centre.

"The car parks will continue to be available to the public and we have worked with BH Live to ensure spaces remain available to both The Quays customers and city centre visitors.

"In addition, the contractual arrangement with BH Live means that there would be no loss of income to the council."

BH Live Active took over the management of a variety of leisure services in Southampton from the start September.

This included The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, Bitterne Leisure Centre, Chamberlayne Leisure Centre and the Outdoor Sports Centre.
