Businesses urged to take 'one simple action' to save thousands in flood damage

A single simple check could save businesses thousands in flood damage, according to one expert.

Yorkshire firms are being warned to take immediate action as Storm Benjamin brings yellow alerts for severe weather, bringing heavy rain and the risk of flooding.

The Met Office has issued four alerts, with the potential for travel disruption, power cuts, and building damage.

Pete Zorgenlos of New Pig, a specialist in workplace leak, drip, and spill solutions, said: "By ensuring gutters and pipes are clear of leaves and debris so rainwater can flow freely, and by using drain covers or plugs where possible to prevent water build-up and backflow, businesses can significantly reduce the chance of a costly emergency later on.

"This one simple action can prevent water backing up and flooding the site."

He advised businesses in high-risk areas to take immediate steps to protect their properties.

Flooding can cause extensive damage to floors, walls, equipment, and stock, leading to costly repairs, replacements, and prolonged downtime.

Mr Zorgenlos said: "Even a few inches of water can cause serious disruption to a business.

"Storm damage isn't always preventable, but the impact can be reduced.

"With the right barriers, absorbents, and a clear response plan in place, firms can protect their people, stock, and operations.

"Preparation is the best defence.

"A few minutes spent now can save days of clean-up later."

In addition to clearing gutters and drains, businesses are urged to identify and seal entry points such as doors and roller shutters, which are common weak spots.

While sandbags remain a traditional choice, Mr Zorgenlos recommended modern alternatives, saying: "Temporary barriers, absorbent socks or modern water-activated flood bags can provide a faster and more reliable seal without the mess of sandbags."

He also advised using absorbent mats and strips at internal thresholds to soak up water quickly and protect high-value areas.

For sites at greater risk, more robust solutions may be necessary.

Mr Zorgenlos said: "Modular or water-filled flood barriers can be deployed quickly, reused multiple times and provide a stronger line of protection than sandbags.

"At the same time, drain covers or plugs should be fitted before heavy rain to prevent polluted floodwater from entering the drainage system or sewage from backing up into premises."

Other recommendations include raising critical equipment off the ground, securing doors and windows, inspecting roofs, and ensuring staff are trained to respond to water or wind damage.

A flood kit should be kept on site with barriers, absorbents, drain covers, leak diverters, and PPE.
