Tánaiste Simon Harris has denounced the killing of US conservative political figure Charlie Kirk, describing it as "utterly abhorrent" following a fatal shooting on a university campus on Wednesday, reports The Mirror.
Kirk, a prominent right-wing commentator, was speaking at Utah Valley University when he was fatally shot. According to university spokesperson Ellen Treanor, the gunman fired from the Losee Centre -- around 200 yards from where Kirk was addressing the crowd -- striking him during his remarks.
Video footage shows Kirk injured, and police later confirmed he had been taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. He was pronounced dead around 90 minutes after the incident, reports The Mirror.
Authorities detained one individual -- who was not the shooter -- but the person was released by the FBI within an hour. Meanwhile, the FBI has launched a tip line and continues to search for the person responsible.
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris strongly criticised the shooting, calling it both "appalling and shocking" and "utterly abhorrent."
"The killing of Charlie Kirk in Utah is appalling and shocking," The Tánaiste said in a statement on Wednesday morning, reports The Mirror.
"Young children have lost a father and a wife has lost her husband needlessly. Such despicable acts of violence are utterly abhorrent," reports The Mirror.
