Met Office warns big weather shift will begin in England 'by Saturday' - Birmingham Live

The Met Office has announced a big weather shift will begin in the UK - amid the reports and rumours of snow. While the Met Office isn't forecasting the white stuff, it does admit to a weather change finally getting underway in England.

And "anticyclonic gloom" could hit England, eventually leading to sunshine breaking through and brighter conditions. The forecasting agency said: "By Saturday, the high will begin to migrate slowly eastwards, allowing a weather front to approach from the Atlantic.

"This will bring a change in wind direction and, for many, a return of sunshine as the anticyclonic gloom starts to lift. However, it is not until Sunday that a more significant change is expected.

"A low-pressure system in the Atlantic will begin to break through, bringing outbreaks of rain, especially to western parts of the UK."

It said: "Turning more unsettled over the weekend. Another cloudy day for many with patchy drizzle, namely in the far north and east, but pushing into the south later too. Some brighter breaks or glimmers of sunshine are possible, especially to the west of hills in the south.

"Remaining settled albeit rather cloudy overnight with further light drizzle in places. Feeling chilly beneath clear skies in Scotland with patchy fog forming by dawn. Breezier in the far west.

"Cloudy for many with any brighter breaks short-lived, as a veil of high cloud spills from the west. Becoming breezier for all later, with rain moving into the far west."

Looking at next week, it says: "Unsettled and breezy, with rain spreading eastwards through Sunday, prolonged and heavy in places. Further blustery showers from Monday, some thundery, though a few sunny spells too. Temperatures near normal."

Referencing a "change is under way", the Met Office says: "So, what does the latest guidance suggest for the days ahead? The high pressure is expected to remain in place through Friday, with low cloud continuing to affect many areas.

"By Saturday, the high will begin to migrate slowly eastwards, allowing a weather front to approach from the Atlantic. This will bring a change in wind direction and, for many, a return of sunshine as the anticyclonic gloom starts to lift.

"However, it is not until Sunday that a more significant change is expected. A low-pressure system in the Atlantic will begin to break through, bringing outbreaks of rain, especially to western parts of the UK.

"Model guidance from both the Met Office and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) shows some uncertainty in the exact track and timing of this low, but all simulations agree that a transition to more unsettled weather is likely."
