Global healthcare company Abbott has called for nationwide action on sarcopenia, or age-related muscle loss, which it says is a health crisis affecting millions of aging Filipinos.
Citing recent studies, Abbott said that as many as 7 in 10 older Filipino adults could be affected by the preventable condition that often goes undiagnosed until it's too late.
Sarcopenia is characterized by a gradual decline in muscle mass and strength. It leads to a higher risk of falls, fractures, cognitive decline, and a loss of independence for the elderly population.
Abbott emphasized the far-reaching implications of an aging society for the country's public health system, as the number of Filipinos aged 65 and older is projected to more than double by 2050.
The group encourages staying active, prioritizing nutrition, getting regular check-ups, and using simple screening tools to identify and address sarcopenia.
"Muscle health is foundational to aging well -- not just for mobility, but for immunity, recovery, and independence," Abbott head of medical affairs in the Philippines, Dr. Gamaliel Tayao, said.
Abbott encouraged Filipinos to join its #Stand4Strength campaign, learn more about Ensure Gold with Streng+hpro, visit its official website, and follow "Alagang Abbott" on Facebook.
