Peach Product Recalled Nationwide Due To Potential Listeria Risk

Peach Product Recalled Nationwide Due To Potential Listeria Risk

The salsa recall is tied to a nationwide peach recall from Moonlight Companies, which was announced days ago

Another peach product has been recalled, following a massive recall of the fruit late last month.

A Texas company is recalling the product over concerns of contamination with a potentially life-threatening bacteria, according to a Nov. 3 memo from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Houston-based company JFE Franchising, Inc. voluntarily recalled a limited batch of products containing yellow and white peaches grown in California for potential listeria monocytogenes contamination, per the memo.

The recall is "in response" to a nationwide peach recall that Moonlight Companies issued days earlier, on Oct. 29, as the affected fruits are ingredients in several JFE Franchising products, including its peach salsa, according to the FDA notice.

Sold under the label "SNOWFRUIT" at Kroger stores, the product is a 16-oz. salsa sold in "plastic clam-shell containers," the memo states.

It retails for $5.99, and the affected products have a best-by date of Nov. 3 or Nov. 4. A full list of affected lot numbers can be found on the FDA's notice.

"There have been no illnesses or consumer complaints reported to date," the memo states. The FDA is advising consumers that bought the recalled salsa not to eat it.

"Consumers who have purchased affected SNOWFRUIT products are urged to not consume the products and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of the products," the memo states. "Consumers with questions may contact the company at hello@snowfruit.com."

"JFE Franchising, Inc., is committed to implementing all measures necessary to fully resolve this situation," the Texas-based company said in the memo. "The safety and wellbeing of our consumers is our top priority."

The company's peach salsa recall comes after Moonlight Companies issued a company statement on Oct. 29 that it would be "voluntarily recalling" yellow and white peaches grown in California that were sold in stores across the country between Sept. 16 and Oct. 29.

The affected peaches were sold at major retailers including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Sprouts.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria infections are rare, but can result in a serious illness called listeriosis. The bacteria is the third-leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States, per the agency.

The FDA said symptoms of the illness include "headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions."

The bacteria is especially harmful and can be life-threatening to at-risk groups such as older adults, women who are pregnant, newborns and the immunocompromised.
