Inbox: Take action that aligns with Declaration
by: Letter to the Editor - Nov. 23, 2025
In recognition of this our 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Ken Burns, esteemed documentary film maker premiered his six-night, 12-hour saga of our fight to become this nation (on Nov. 16.)
It is a violent story of a coming together for a common purpose.
It is truly amazing that with such diversity (religion, language, customs, limited means of communication and lack of funding) how we became "United" but we dared to dream big.
If we are to keep this democracy, we the people have to reclaim our country from the current authoritarian regime. The hallmarks of autocracy are: interfere with free and fair elections by gutting voting rights and opportunities, go after the free press/media, eliminate checks and balances, appoint only your loyalists, neutralize the Judiciary, dismantle institutions that protect rights, gut civil service and normalize violence such as ICE tactics and national guard takeovers. We have seen all of this now!
I urge all citizens to be aware and stay informed. Pick your issue and organize with others towards that common goal. Find a way to be involved through non-violent protests, boycotts, contacting officials, voting and working the polls and supporting candidates.
We can dare to dream big again to create a government more responsive to the needs of the people with strong social safety nets, fair taxes and universal healthcare. In this season of gratitude, let us take action that aligns with the declaration that all men (people) are created equal.
