Newcastle United is my 'second home' and leaving wasn't easy - now I am plotting their downfall | Chronicle Live

When Newcastle United line up against Burnley at St James' Park tomorrow, there will be a familiar face keeping goal for the opposition.

Martin Dubravka left Newcastle in the summer after seven-and-a-half years on Tyneside, joining the Clarets in a bid to find more first team football.

Since moving to Turf Moor, the Slovakia international has quickly established himself as the club's number one goalkeeper and is playing week-in, week-out in the Premier League.

Saturday's clash between the two sides will be the 36-year-old's first time returning to St James' Park since leaving the club and it will be an emotional reunion for him.

"I can call Newcastle my second home," Dubravka told Sky Sports. "I found beautiful people there, so many friends. I was there when we fought for the relegation, then I was there when we went through the transition.

"I was also there when we competed with the top teams, bringing the trophy after so many years back to Newcastle. So I'm glad that they are going in the right direction.

"It's a sleeping giant, and now, finally, it's the right time for them to shine again. I will always have a great memory about the whole city, the whole club.

"It was not easy to leave because, once you're there, you feel a connection, a bond with the fans, with the whole club, with the people around the club as well."

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe is looking forward to seeing Dubravka, too, and he praised the legacy he left at the club during his time on Tyneside.

"He was massive for us," Howe told reporters in Friday's press conference. "Nick [Pope] got injured, Martin came in and the team really benefited, not necessarily from that change, but benefited in that moment from a lot of wins.

"We went on a run of nine wins in a row and it elevated our league position from one of difficulty and gave us the platform to go on and achieve what we did. He played in key games, the Arsenal games in the semi-final.

"Before I came to the football club, in difficult moments, in relegation battles, he always stood up and made a difference. I really enjoyed working with him. He's an outstanding person and goalkeeper.

"It'll be good to welcome him back, I'm sure for the supporters, because I know he had a special relationship with them and he deserves a warm round of applause."

Dubravka made 179 appearances for the Magpies and was part of the squad which finally ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup last season.

He also played in Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce's Newcastle teams prior to the 2021 takeover and while he has a huge affinity with the club, he will be tasked with stopping them on Saturday.

Burnley head to Tyneside in the Premier League's relegation zone, having lost five successive league matches. Meanwhile, Newcastle will be looking for three points that will move them further towards the European places.

They just have to hope Dubravka doesn't scupper their plans and that his return to St James' Park is not a happy one.
