Banning, Carson and Port of Los Angeles baseball teams advance to City Section semifinals

The Banning and Carson baseball teams advanced to next week's L.A. City Section Division I semifinals with wins Saturday.

Pedro Ibanez, who had three hits, scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on an error for the Pilots (21-8), who defeated No. 8 Garfield 2-1.

Matthew Gonzalez pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the win. AJ Herrera had two and an RBI.

Banning will face No. 5 Verdugo Hills in Wednesday's semifinal at Stengel Field.

Verdugo Hills defeated No. 4 San Pedro 5-4 Saturday. The Dons led 5-1 and held on as the Pirates made things interesting with a three-run seventh inning.

Second-seed Carson shut out No. 7 Palisades 6-0. The Colts scored two runs in the third and four in the fourth. The Colts will face No. 11 Taft Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The semifinal winners will advance to the final May 24 at Dodger Stadium.

Port of Los Angeles 4, Sherman Oaks CES 0: Ethan Vasquez and Jaydan Lamadrid had a double and RBI apiece to lead the Polar Bears (13-8) offense in the Division II quarterfinal win.

Damian Ochoa pitched a three-hit shutout, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

POLA will be on the road in Tuesday's semifinals against No. 6 Sotomayor.
