18 people displaced after tree topples over Thousand Oaks apartment units

Eighteen people were displaced on Monday after a large tree fell atop two apartment complexes in Thousand Oaks.

Amid a powerful storm that delivered measurable rain over the past several days to Southern California, soil has weakened and caused some trees to topple across the region. Such was the case around 11 a.m. when a large tree crashed onto two apartment buildings along Shady Oaks and West Hillcrest Drives.

The Ventura County Fire Department said the tree fell on eight units in total, resulting in one unit being yellow-tagged and another being red-tagged. At the time of the tree fall, two units were occupied but no injuries occurred.

"There was a big tree that just fell on this apartment over here, and it was a big tree," said Daymon Smith, who lives nearby. "It shattered the roof and it's been taped up ever since."

Smith said his unit was unaffected by the crash, but said he lost power for a few hours due to the incident.

First responders said there was no immediate danger of either building collapsing.

Since 18 people were displaced, their management companies are helping to relocate them. It's unclear when exactly those who were affected by the fall will be able to return to their homes.
