BasketballDoncin leads Mavericks past Trail Blazers

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Luka Doncic returned from a wrist injury and had 36 points in the Dallas Mavericks' 137-131 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

Doncic, who missed five games, also had 13 assists in the Mavericks' fourth straight win.

Anfernee Simons had 27 points, including 24 in the third quarter, for the Blazers.

Dallas led by 112-101 after Spencer Dinwiddie's 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, but the Blazers came back to tie it at 127 on Deni Avdija's three-point play with 1:54 left.

P.J. Washington answered with a 3-pointer from the baseline for Dallas, and the Blazers couldn't catch up.

Portland led by as many as 10 points in the opening quarter, but the Mavs closed the gap for a 61-58 lead at the half. Quentin Grimes' dunk gave Dallas a 79-67 lead in the third, and the Mavs held a 100-97 advantage going into the final period.

Ohio State, Miami and Clemson plunged in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll Sunday following their losses during a wild weekend, eight of the top 10 teams moved up one spot and Oregon was No. 1 for the seventh straight week.

The shakeup creates two top-five matchups in conference championship games coming up on Saturday, a day before the College Football Playoff bracket is announced. Oregon, the nation's only unbeaten team, will face No. 3 Penn State in the Big Ten game in Indianapolis. No. 2 Texas will play No. 5 Georgia in the SEC game in Atlanta, a rematch of their top-five meeting in October won by the Bulldogs.

No. 4 Notre Dame, 11-1 and a winner of 10 straight, won't play again until the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State, which lost for the fourth straight time to Michigan and was knocked out of the Big Ten title game, dropped five spots to No. 7, behind Tennessee.

SMU is No. 8 and followed by Indiana and Boise State. The Broncos are in the top 10 for the first time since 2011 and the highest-ranked Group of Five team, two spots ahead of No. 12 Arizona State, the highest-ranked Big 12 team.

If the Broncos win the Mountain West title and are one of the top four-seeded conference champions in the final CFP rankings, they would receive a bye to the quarterfinals.

Purdue fires coach Walters: Purdue Athletic director Mike Bobinski fired first-time head coach Ryan Walters following a brutal 1-11 season.

Brown out at West Virginia: West Virginia fired coach Neal Brown as the Mountaineers continue to flounder in the Big 12, finishing the season 6-6.

MacIntyre fired by FIU: Florida International fired coach Mike MacIntyre after three seasons, all of which the Panthers finished with 4-8 records.

Kitchens named UNC interim coach: North Carolina elevated former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens as its interim coach for an upcoming bowl game after the firing of Mack Brown.

Temple hires Keeler: Temple hired Sam Houston State coach K.C. Keeler as its new football coach in the Owls' latest attempt to turn back into a winning program.

Kennesaw St. names Mack head coach: Jerry Mack, the running backs coach for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, was hired as Kennesaw State's head football coach.

Umpire Paganelli carted off with leg injury: Umpire Carl Paganelli did not return to the game between the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers after injuring his leg 45 seconds into the first quarter. The game finished with six officials on the field instead of the normal seven.

Jaguars sign Little to extension: Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle Walker Little, who didn't land a full-time starting job until the team traded veteran Cam Robinson in October, signed a three-year contract extension. The deal is worth $45 million, including roughly $26 million guaranteed.

Around the NFL: Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was carted off the field after taking a violent blow to the facemask from Houston linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. He was quickly ruled out with a concussion. ... San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a knee injury that coach Kyle Shanahan described as "potentially" season-ending. ... Saints tight end Taysom Hill was carted off the field with a left knee injury.

Baseball: The Mets added Frankie Montas to their rotation, agreeing to a $34 million, two-year contract with the right-hander.

Soccer: LA Galaxy midfielder Riqui Puig will miss Saturday's MLS Cup final after he tore the ACL in his left knee in the Western Conference final.

Motor sports: Max Verstappen followed up his Formula 1 drivers' title with another win in an incident-packed Qatar Grand Prix as Lando Norris was hit with a penalty that ended his challenge for the race victory. ... The president of Formula 1's governing body denied ordering a recent wave of staff dismissals -- including the removal of the race director with three events remaining in the season.

Golf: American Ryggs Johnston won his first professional title by closing with a 4-under 68 at Kingston Heath for a three-shot victory in the Australian Open. Jiyai Shin captured her second Women's Australian Open.

Skiing: Swiss skier Camille Rast earned her first career World Cup victory in the slalom. ... Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a deep puncture wound on the right side of her abdomen and "severe muscle trauma" during her scary crash in a giant slalom race but no serious bone, ligament or organ damage.
