CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) -St. Herman House served meals and distributed winter gear to people without homes on Christmas Day, continuing its year-round mission to help the homeless community.
Volunteers handed out plates of pasta and ham at the Cleveland shelter, which operates 365 days a year. The house also provided winter clothing and hygiene bags to visitors.
"We give out clothing, we give out a hygiene bag," said Roy McInerney, house manager at St. Herman House.
McInerney said people receive socks, gloves and hats before they leave. The gear helps them survive overnight temperatures.
"A lot of places downtown pass out winter gear, but only at certain times, so the community sometimes has a hard time getting what they need when they need it most," McInerney said.
The house makes winter gear available to people without homes every day, but McInerney said they always need more donations.
"Hats, gloves and socks, we never have enough of," he said.
The shelter relies on donations to keep people prepared for winter conditions. McInerney asked anyone who can help to drop off clothes at St. Herman House.
"The community and churches that help mean an awful lot to the community and to us. So thank you and Merry Christmas," he said.
