Met Éireann has forecast another washout day for the country

Six counties remain under a Status Yellow rain warning, as Met Éireann forecasts outbreaks of persistent and heavy rain with localised flooding for parts of the country.

A Status Yellow rain warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork and Waterford issued on Monday remains in place until midday. Met Éireann warned of persistent rain, heavy at times for these counties, with localised flooding, difficult travel conditions and poor visibility possible.

Overall, the forecaster said there would be changeable weather for the rest of the week and the weekend, with rain at times.

Wednesday will also be dull and wet with widespread rain, heavy at times, although the rain is set to clear for a drier afternoon and evening with just patches of light rain or drizzle.

Thursday will have a mostly cloudy and misty start to the day, with rain in northern areas and isolated showers elsewhere. Here is Met Éireann's forecast for the week ahead:

Wednesday night will be cloudy with patches of light rain or drizzle at first. More frequent spells of rain will move northwards over the country overnight, clearing to isolated showers in the south by morning. There'll be mist and fog too. Lowest temperatures of 9C to 13C with light to moderate southerly or variable winds.

A mostly cloudy and misty start to the day, with rain in northern areas and isolated showers elsewhere. The rain and mist will clear during the morning and the cloud will gradually clear eastwards too, leaving sunny spells and just isolated showers. Thursday night will be dry and clear at first. Cloud and outbreaks of rain will move into the west and southwest overnight and moderate to fresh southeasterly winds will develop. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 8C.

Cloud and rain will move northeastwards across the country during Friday and will be followed by sunny spells in the west and southwest. Highest temperatures of 9C to 15C with moderate to fresh southeasterly winds, easing and becoming westerly behind the rain.
