John Cena faced a number of stars in his retirement tour. He squared off against Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, R-Truth, AJ Styles, Logan Paul, CM Punk, Dominik Mysterio, and Brock Lesnar at big WWE PLEs. However, there's one superstar Cena couldn't compete with in the ring.
The 17-time WWE Champion didn't get the opportunity to clash against Drew McIntyre in his retirement tour. And he's happy that he didn't. During a recent appearance on Chris Van Vliet's show, Insight, Cena said that he's glad that he didn't have a match against the former WWE Champion because of how good an athlete McIntyre was.
"Glad, I wasn't on the other side of the kick. Again ,a story of resilience," John Cena said. [1: 18:00 onwards]
Cena was asked to give his one-word review of the superstars in the roster. He called Cody Rhodes 'Resilient', Randy Orton, 'Smooth', R-Truth, 'Beautiful', Logan Paul, 'Underrated', and referred to CM Punk as his 'Wrestling Soulmate'.
John Cena has never had a singles match against Drew McIntyre in WWE. Although they shared the ring in August this year, on SmackDown, that was a tag team match. Cena had teamed up with Cody Rhodes in a match against Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul.
The contest had ended in a DQ after Logan Paul gave a low-blow to Cena. Apart from this tag team match, McIntyre was also in the Elimination Chamber match earlier this year with Cena, but he was taken out by Damian Priest.
A match isn't possible also, as Cena is down to one last bout, and it would be against The Ring General, Gunther, at Saturday Night's Main Event (SNME) on December 13, at the Capital One Arena, in Washington, D.C.
The Scottish Warrior recently broke his character and opened up on not being able to face Cena in a match before the latter's retirement. During a recent exclusive interview with ESPN, McIntyre called Cena a legend and said that he was sad that they didn't share the ring even once.
"I mean, he's meant everything to our industry. When The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, you know, left WWE, the top superstars of Triple H, Shawn Michaels, were at the end of their career. The company and the world needed somebody to step up into that top position. John stepped up in a massive way for multiple generations. And it's insane to say that he's about to have his last couple of matches. I'm sad I didn't get one of them, but I'm glad I'm part of the roster. I'm glad I got to travel the world. I'm glad I got to learn from John Cena because he is a legend, and he may just be the GOAT."
The Scottish Warrior is currently locked in a rivalry with Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes on SmackDown. Although he is suspended from the show, McIntyre can attack the American Nightmare during his match against NXT Champion Oba Femi at SNME.
The main event of the show would be John Cena against Gunther in the retirement match.
