BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY THIS WEEKEND: One of the most impactful storm systems in weeks is on the way with rain and storms likely late Saturday night through the early morning hours on Sunday. There is a low-end risk for severe storms, but my main concern is damaging straight-line wind gusts, especially with the vegetation stressed by the drought. Even before the rain and storms arrive, southerly winds may gust over 30 mph through midnight.
Instability will be fading as this system moves east through the early morning hours on Sunday and the risk for an isolated tornado will be limited to the far northwest corner of the state. The good news is we finally have some much-needed rain on the way and models are back on board with over one inch of rain in some areas. This should also time out perfectly with the events happening. The greatest rain chances will hold off until after the college football games and before the race on Sunday.
THE NEXT BIG THING: A big drop in temperatures is on the way by Monday morning. We could see lows in the upper 30s in areas to the north, with highs in the 70s. Another cold front will bring a secondary surge of cold air Tuesday, with a few showers, and lows back in the 40s through mid-week, with highs in the 70s. Get ready for some real fall weather next week!
A tropical system may form in the Caribbean in the long range. We will monitor, but for now no concerns.
