The studio will join the ranks of Mubi and A24 in book publishing, aiming for an ambitious six to seven titles this year.
Somesuch, the Academy Award-winning production company based in the U.K., has announced plans to branch out into the world of books this summer, joining such film studios as A24 and Mubi in making a foray into publishing.
Somesuch Editions will be led and edited by Suze Olbrich, who heads up the studio's fiction and culture journal Somesuch Stories, and supported by Somesuch's 40 employees across its London and Los Angeles offices. The imprint plans to publish six to seven titles in its first year, starting with Kimberly Campanello's debut novel Use the Words You Have, slated for June 23. The book follows an American student and her love affair with an older local on a summer French exchange trip. Distribution in the U.S. and U.K. to be handled by U.K.-based distributors Public Knowledge Books via Central Books.
Unlike A24 and Mubi, who entered book publishing last September and this past April, respectively, Somesuch Editions has not announced an explicit focus on cinema. "As a film production company, storytelling has always been at the heart of our business," said Somesuch cofounder Tim Nash. "Having now published our arts journal Somesuch Stories for over a decade, launching a fiction and visual arts imprint is a natural evolution." Somesuch Editions also has its eyes set toward a high volume and wide breadth of original work compared to Mubi, which is aiming for two to three titles per year, and A24, whose catalog is mostly comprised of screenplays.
