Diane Keaton, Oscar-winning star of 'Annie Hall' and 'First Wives Club,' dies at 79

The legendary actress who rose to fame in the 1970s passed away in California, PEOPLE confirms. According to a family spokesperson, further details are not being shared at this time, and her loved ones have requested privacy.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton was the eldest of four children. Her father worked as a civil engineer, while her mother was a homemaker.

Keaton became a household name with her iconic role in "The Godfather" films and her frequent collaborations with director Woody Allen, including appearing in the film version of "Play It Again, Sam," released in 1972, "Sleeper" (1973), and "Love and Death" (1975). She earned an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1977 classic "Annie Hall." Over the course of her decades-long career, she worked repeatedly with director Nancy Meyers and led the "Book Club" franchise.

The Oscar winner starred alongside Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler in 1996's "The First Wives Club," about three divorcees whose husbands left them for younger women.

The actress never married but was romantically linked to Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty throughout her life. Keaton adopted two children, her daughter, Dexter, in 1996, and her son, Duke, in 2001.

"Motherhood was not an urge I couldn't resist," she shared in a 2008 interview with Ladies' Home Journal. "It was more like a thought I'd been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in."
