A patch of land on a Huddersfield street has been branded an "eyesore" by a resident who claims it has been a dumping ground for around 50 years.

Nadeem Ahmed has been left frustrated and angry over the state of a piece of land on Springdale Avenue at Thornton Lodge. He has been begging Kirklees Council to tidy up the land but says he's getting nowhere. Nadeem says the pile of rubbish appears to be growing.

Nadeem, 50, said he could remember the land being overgrown and untidy when he was four of five years old and little has changed in that time. He says the land has been used for the dumping of mattresses, a toilet, tyres, bottles, a bath and "all sorts." He has seen mice running in and out of the land.

"It's been a fly tipping place and a waste area for 50 years - it's not been cleaned for over 20 years. It is just frustrating to look at the same thing every day for 50 years. That's how long I have been a resident and nothing ever gets done."

Nadeem is aiming his anger at Kirklees Council. He says the local authority has, in the past, spoken about creating a park at the site but nothing came of it. He says the last time the land was tidied up was around 20 years ago. He added: "I have been reporting this for over 15 years to many councillors and have all emails. It's a disgusting eyesore."

Nadeem added: "This patch of land has been a dumping ground for 50 years and Kirklees are just not interested. It's an eyesore patch of land which could look so beautiful and give the area a massive boost if something was invested."

Local Councillor Jo Lawson told Yorkshire Live: "The land is vested with Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and is an eyesore to say the least, with the fly tipping, overgrown vegetation and vermin spotted on and around the land. Pest control have visited the site on numerous occasions at my request - the last visit being six weeks ago. I have requested again for the land to be cut back and the fly tip removed.

"It was placed on the (Kirklees) assets to be disposed of list some time ago. But no firm decision has been made regarding its long term future when I've enquired again."

Kirklees Council has been approached for comment.
