AdventHealth launches hospital at home: 5 notes

Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth is rolling out an acute hospital care at home program.

Here are five things to know:

1. The health system, which has more than 50 hospitals across nine states, will start by offering hospital-at-home care from its Winter Park, Fla., hospital near Orlando, according to a Jan. 6 Instagram post.

2. Patients receive inpatient-level care from home after being outfitted with medical equipment and a tablet for 24/7 access to clinicians. "Research shows that being in a familiar environment, surrounded by family, can be helpful for the healing process for many people," said Maura Nazario, MSN, RN, vice president of clinical operations for AdventHealth home-based services, in a Jan. 6 news release.

3. CMS approved AdventHealth for acute hospital care at home in October 2023. The programs can take a year or more -- and millions of dollars -- to set up.

4. Some of the nation's largest health systems -- including Cleveland Clinic and Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic -- have a big hospital-at-home presence in Florida. Besides having a large senior population, the state allows paramedics to provide the twice-daily home visits mandated by CMS; some states require registered nurses to do the task.
