Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen has been automatically suspended one game by the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Sunday for violating NHL rule 23.6 (Physical Infractions).
Per the NHL rule book, in regular season games, any player who incurs a total of two game misconduct penalties in the physical infractions category before playing in 41 consecutive regular season without such penalty will be suspended automatically for the next game.
In Saturday's game against the Calgary Flames, Rantanen picked up a five-minute major penalty for his hit on Flames forward Matt Coronato as well as an additional five minutes for fighting and a 10-minute game misconduct.
Coronato went down the tunnel after the hit with a bloody face as his Flames teammate Jonathan Huberdeau fought Rantanen.
Saturday was Rantanen's second time this week picking up a 10-minute game misconduct penalty.
In Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders, Rantanen collided with Islanders defenceman Alexander Romanov with 27.3 seconds left in regulation, sending him face-first into the boards.
He was also assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding along with the game misconduct call.
Romanov was down on the ice and needed help going down the tunnel after. He was later placed on the injured reserve.
Rantanen has never been suspended in his NHL career. However, he was fined $2,000 on Friday for a second offence of NHL Rule 64 (Diving/Embellishment).
The 29-year-old has has 10 goals and 28 points in 22 games with Dallas this season.
