Doctors in three states are concerned about new influenza strain

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Cases of a "highly contagious and aggressive" strain of influenza known as "subclade K" are increasing in the United States and around the world, federal health officials announced.

Fever, chills, headache and fatigue are all symptoms of the new virus strain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there will be at least 4.5 million subclade K influenza infections, 49,000 hospitalizations, and 1,900 influenza deaths this season.

Ohio is considered to be at moderate risk, according to the CDC's latest flu case numbers. Indiana has low influenza prevalence and Kentucky has minimal influenza activity.

Vaccination is recommended for most people

UC Health's Dr. Christine O'Dea One said taking precautions against subclade K can reduce the severity if someone becomes infected.

"The vaccine and our immunity is something we've never seen before, so we need to build up immunity," Dr. O'Dea said.

Dr. O'Dea said almost everyone should get vaccinated.

"The influenza vaccine is intended for everyone over six months of age, so it will provide partial protection against this new strain," she said.

"You can still get the flu even if you get the flu vaccine, but you're less likely to get seriously ill and less likely to die or be hospitalized," Dr. O'Dea said.

Prevention and treatment recommendations

Dr. O'Dea said if you feel sick, don't go to work and stay home.

She recommends wearing masks at home, especially for women who are breastfeeding.

"If you are breastfeeding and have an infant at home, you should continue breastfeeding, but you should wear a mask around your baby," Dr. O'Dea said.

Dr. O'Dea said the best thing to do if you get sick is to contact your primary care physician first before visiting the emergency room.

He said many of the symptoms of this type of influenza virus can be treated outside the hospital, making people more comfortable at home and avoiding the need to incur high hospital bills.
