A fire late Thursday evening destroyed the Tank Creek Bridge on Wisconsin's Great River State Trail, severing the path's connection between Trempealeau and Onalaska.
Wisconsin DNR officials said the bridge is a total loss. There is no reroute or detour planned, as the bridge was the only foot crossing over Tank Creek through a large marshland.
Photos uploaded to Google Maps show new barricades preventing access across the bridge. Nobody will be allowed to access the structure while the investigation and repairs continue.
Visitors who take the trail from Trempealeau or Onalaska will have to turn around and head back the way they came once they reach the bridge.
The DNR has not established a timeline or budget to replace the bridge. First priority will be to remove the bridge and any debris to restrict public access and the potential for accidents.

Since the bridge traverses a state waterway, the state DNR is responsible for investigating the cause of the fire.
The bridge over Tank Creek is one of 21 on the Great River State Trail. The Tank Creek bridge was built in 1957 as part of the abandoned Chicago Northwestern railway.
