Q+A: Jason Dumbreck of Xpera on running London's micro-shelter

Q: Can you tell me a little bit about why Xpera wanted to be involved here?

When you look on our website, the genesis of (our company) appears to be investigations and security, but we kind of morphed from that, like we wrote a lot of emergency preparedness for different organizations and . . . government entities, then we move into operationalizing it. We've got a long history of housing individuals . . . for any number of needs, (like) evacuations. . . . We had thousands of Indigenous community members down in Niagara Falls that we were looking after, and that's housing, wraparound services, medical, transportation, recreation, everything for these folks that had to evacuate because of fires. It doesn't matter what population you look after, a cross-section of anywhere, you will deal with mental illness, addiction. . . . So our guys and girls have plenty of experience with this, and all have training in CPR, naloxone, de-escalation. It's all a trauma-informed approach. So it's a gentle approach to managing a site like this, and obviously our goal is to build a community here.
