Weekend border rush sees 403,000 Hongkongers head north, Shenzhen Bay packed on return

24th November 2025 - (Hong Kong) Immigration Department figures show that weekend northbound travel by Hongkongers has hovered near 400,000 in recent weeks, with 403,000 crossings recorded on 22nd November -- the second-highest weekend tally since October. Heavy return traffic was seen on the evening of 23rd November, with images on mainland social media depicting Shenzhen Bay Port jam-packed, described by users as "overrun".

Photos posted on Xiaohongshu showed dense queues at Shenzhen Bay late at night, with long lines at multiple e‑channels and manual lanes. Separately, Liantang Port experienced peak return flows yesterday, with lengthy queues reported on the Shenzhen side.

Since 11th October, northbound movements by Hongkongers have exceeded 370,000 every Saturday. On 22nd November, 403,000 people travelled north, surpassing the 400,000 mark again after a week's interval. By control point, 122,000 crossed via Luohu, 101,000 via Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (Futian Port), and 76,000 via Shenzhen Bay.

Southbound mainland visitors entering Hong Kong on 22nd November totalled 134,000 -- around 6,000 fewer than the previous Saturday (15th November) -- yet marking the sixth consecutive weekend above 100,000 and the second‑highest Saturday in the period.

Large crowds of Hongkongers returning last night were documented on Xiaohongshu, where users posted images of extensive queues at Shenzhen Bay and described the scene as "Shenzhen Bay in a state of collapse".
