Egypt on Sunday unveiled two restored statues of Pharaoh in Luxor 3,200 years after they fell in an earthquake, in the latest archaeological event aimed at attracting tourists to the country.
The giant alabaster statues, known as the Colossi of Memnon, were reassembled in a 20-year project. They represent Amenhotep III, who ruled ancient Egypt about 3,400 years ago.
"We are celebrating today, in fact, the completion and erection of these two huge statues," Mohamed Ismail, Secretary-General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, told the Associated Press before a ceremony on Sunday.
Mr. Ismail said the statues were of great importance to Luxor, a city known for its ancient temples and other monuments. He added that it is also an attempt "to revive the appearance of this funerary temple of King Amenhotep III a long time ago."
Amenhotep III, one of the most prominent pharaohs, ruled during the 500-year New Kingdom, the most prosperous period of ancient Egypt. The pharaoh, whose mummy is on display in a Cairo museum, ruled in the period between 1390 and 1353 BC, a peaceful period known for its prosperity and construction, including the temple in which the giant statue of Memnon is located.
Ismail said that the two statues fell due to a strong earthquake that occurred around 1200 BC, which also destroyed the funerary temple of the pharaoh.
The statues were fragmentary and partly uprooted, their bases scattered. The Ministry of Antiquities said some of its blocks were reused in another temple, but archaeologists returned them to rebuild the giant statue.
In the late 1990s, an Egyptian-German mission, headed by German Egyptologist Horig Sorozian, began work in the temple area and undertook the restoration of the two statues. "This project aims to save the last remains of a once-prestigious temple," she said.
The statues show Amenhotep III sitting with his hands resting on his thighs, looking east towards the Nile and the rising sun. He wears a headdress topped with double crowns and a royal pleated kilt, symbolizing divine rule. There are two small statues at the pharaoh's feet depicting his wife Tiye.
The two statues - 14.5 meters and 13.6 meters respectively - overlook the entrance to the King's Temple on the west bank of the Nile River. It was made of Egyptian alabaster from the Hatnub quarries in Middle Egypt.
Sunday's opening of the museum in Luxor came just six weeks after the long-awaited opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the centerpiece of the government's attempt to boost the country's tourism industry and bring money into the troubled economy. The huge project is located near the famous Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx.
The tourism sector, which relies heavily on Egypt's rich Pharaonic antiquities, has suffered during years of political turmoil and violence following the 2011 protests. In recent years, the sector has begun to recover after the coronavirus pandemic and amid Russia's war on Ukraine, and both countries are major sources of tourists visiting Egypt.

The UN team of experts found that the regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The commission's 2017 report followed a trip to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah al-Senussi, Gaddafi's former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash reportedly amounting to $560 million in $100 bills were held by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Another cache was said to be located in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes in the local offices of an international human rights organization based in France.

Mary Byrne, a volunteer counselor at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew went through will take some time to overcome.
"It was worse than a prison sentence, as a person can at least handle a set amount of time in prison," she said.

"It's going to be a mental challenge, finding other work to support their family because they've been out of commission for so long. Hopefully they'll get the care they need when they come home."
