UK faces 'seven days' of snow with exact start and end date announced - Birmingham Live

The UK faces a bone-chilling -14C snow bomb with flurries from January 4 onwards. Maps and charts, from WX Charts, have turned a shade of dark blue, with light blue, white, grey and blotches of purple interspersed, as a wintry vortex and Polar bomb hits until January 10.

Maps show the threat of snow from January 4 to January 10 alongside teeth-chattering temperatures - with seven days of cold weather in a deep freeze.

Sb-zero lows are widespread overnight and highs struggling to rise much above freezing for the entire week. By January 8 there could be as much as 43cm of snow in western Scotland and up to 17cm could fall in northern England.

In the short term, the BBC Weather team says: "Frequent and heavy snow showers may lead to some travel disruption to begin the year.

"Disruption to travel is likely on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel. There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

"There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected - There is a chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces."

Warnings are issued for rain, thunderstorms, wind, snow, lightning, ice, extreme heat and fog. These warnings are given a colour depending on a combination of both the impact of the weather may have and the likelihood of those impacts occurring.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert, which means potential of bad weather situations causing disruption to travel and activities.

Amber means there is increased potential of bad weather situations causing disruption to travel, risk to life and property.

Red means dangerous weather is expected, take action to keep yourself and others safe.
