A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula in 2025 triggered a giant tsunami, which was captured from space. Tremors shook the Pacific Ocean, and the ocean was caught in the grip of tsunami waves, although no huge waves were reported on the coasts. NASA's new Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite was able to see the monster wave. Launched in 2022, this was the largest earthquake ever captured by a satellite. Using data from SWOT and deep-ocean tsunami buoys, researchers mapped the earthquake's rupture zone. The hurricane extended to about 402 kilometers, and its intensity caused parts of the sea floor to rise by 13 feet. The results were published in the journal Seismic Record in November 2025.
Scientists collected data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Tsunami Warning System and NASA's SWOT satellite to understand how the 2025 Kamchatka tsunami will form. NOAA's DART (Deep Ocean Tsunami Assessment and Reporting) system has sensors on the seafloor that can detect changes in water pressure. Data is transmitted to surface buoys and satellites in near real time. Researchers aim to understand how the seafloor shifted during the Kamchatka earthquake.

When the data was further processed, they got a clear view of tsunami waves and how quickly they spread.
