Hail, heavy rain and strong winds as powerful storm smashes east coast

Sydney and parts of the NSW coast have been hit by a brief but intense storm.

The intense weather swept through large parts of the state late on Friday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, hail and lightning.

A 7NEWS drone captured dramatic cloudbursts rolling over Sydney's beaches, as the storm stretched north towards the Mid North Coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) reported hailstones up to 3cm wide in Moorland about 3.15pm, followed by 2cm hailstones in Engadine about 4.20pm.

Minto, Glenfield and Campbelltown were also in the firing line, with footage showing hail pelting down from darkened skies.

Rain and strong winds reached Sydney about 5pm, capping off a hot day that saw temperatures climb to 33C -- and up to 34C in some western suburbs.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by BOM at 4.30pm for large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall, affecting the Hunter, Metropolitan, Central Tablelands and parts of the Mid North Coast, Illawarra, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains and Upper Western districts.

Residents were urged to move cars under cover, secure loose items, avoid fallen power lines, stay clear of creeks and storm drains, and remain indoors until conditions eased.
