Salesforce fallout: Benioff under fire for ICE outreach as billionaire investor leaves foundation

San Francisco's annual Dreamforce convention is wrapping up, but it's not been without controversy.

This week, Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff has made a number of statements about the city itself, at one point echoing the president's call to deploy the National Guard in San Francisco.

Silicon Valley billionaire, venture capitalist, and longtime Democratic donor Ron Conway has also resigned from the Salesforce Foundation board. In an email obtained by ABC7 News' media partners at SF Standard, Conway said he was "shocked and disappointed" by Benioff's remarks.

Conway, who is known as the "Godfather of Silicon Valley," said that "I barely recognize the person I have so long admired."

Most recently, Benioff pitched to ICE using Salesforce's AI technology to rapidly hire 10,000 new officers and agents.

Despite the controversies, Benioff touted this year's Dreamforce as the safest yet. He says it's thanks in large part to the 200 additional San Francisco officers who joined the ranks this week.

Benioff is also pledging $1 million in hiring bonuses for new police officers and $15 billion to San Francisco over the next five years.

New York Times' San Francisco Bureau Chief Heather Knight broke both of these stories this week -- after she spoke to Benioff before the annual conference. Watch her full interview with ABC7 news in the player above.
