New scheme combines getting fit with giving back to the community

A new volunteering scheme is helping people get fit and giving back to the community.

GoodGym, a programme that combines exercise with practical volunteering, is launching in Bolton with the support of Bolton CVS.

The scheme will see residents run, walk or cycle to help out at food banks, schools, community gardens and other charitable projects.

Karina Royles, senior funding and grants development officer at Bolton CVS, said: "Bolton's Fund is delighted to support the launch of GoodGym in Bolton.

"This inspiring initiative combines wellbeing and community action, empowering local people to improve their health while helping neighbours and supporting local causes.

"We are proud to administer this fund, made possible through Bolton Council's ongoing commitment to supporting our community."

The group's first volunteering session will take place on Monday, November 10 at Bolton Lads & Girls Club.

GoodGym area activator Rowan said: "I'm really proud to see GoodGym launching in Bolton.

"This is a town full of people who care about their community, and GoodGym gives us a fun, social, and active way to make a difference together.

"Bringing GoodGym to Bolton feels like the start of something special.

"We've got a fantastic community spirit here, and this is a brilliant way to channel that energy into helping local causes.

"I can't wait to see the impact we can have together."

In addition to supporting community organisations, GoodGym volunteers will also visit isolated older people in Bolton to help with practical tasks they are unable to do themselves, such as gardening and moving furniture.

These visits also provide an important opportunity for social interaction.

The scheme is open to all fitness levels and is free to take part in.

Research from the London School of Economics found that participation in GoodGym led to 'extraordinary' increases in life satisfaction, connectedness and belonging.
