A Springfield woman died Sunday in a Joplin hospital, two days after a Friday evening crash that also killed a driver from Oklahoma and left two passengers with injuries.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash between two sport utility vehicles -- a 2017 Acura MDX and a 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer -- was reported at 7:46 p.m. Friday in Newton County.
The crash was on Missouri 43, 3 miles north of Seneca.
The Springfield woman, 52, was driving the Acura north on Missouri 43 when it collided head-on with the Chevrolet that a 77-year-old woman from Jay, Oklahoma, was driving south.
The 77-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene and her 71-year female passenger -- also from Jay, Oklahoma -- was transported by ambulance to Mercy Joplin with serious injuries.
The 52-year-old Springfield woman was transported from the scene Friday to Mercy Joplin, where she died Sunday. Her 60-year-old male passenger was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.
The patrol said it was unknown if the Oklahoma driver was wearing a seatbelt but said the other driver and passengers in both vehicles were wearing seatbelts.
Following a recent change in policy, the patrol no longer includes the names of those involved in crashes in preliminary online reports.
