California certifies redistricting election results. Over 50% of eligible voters turned out

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Secretary of State's Office said Friday that results from last month's special redistricting election have been certified, and over 50% of registered voters turned out.

Proposition 50, which authorized temporary changes to Congressional district maps in response to Texas' redistricting, passed with 7,453,339 "yes" votes (64.4%) while 4,116,998 (35.6%) Californians voted "no," according to the office's statement of vote. Election day was Nov. 4.

California Congressional maps will be temporarily redrawn to give Democrats an advantage of five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives until 2030, and Gov. Gavin Newsom reportedly pushed for Prop. 50 to compete with President Donald Trump's efforts to give Republicans an advantage in what are generally considered red states, including Texas.

Approximately 11,584,393 of 23,093,274 registered California voters sent in their ballots, meaning about 50.16% of registered voters participated. Some political analysts said that the statistic is impressive for a special election, ABC10 previously reported.
