Avoid a clog: Here's a chance to dispose of Thanksgiving grease properly in Evansville

EVANSVILLE -- Residents are invited to dispose of their used cooking oils responsibly the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility will host its fourth annual cooking oil recycling day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Sunrise Pump Station, 1200 Riverside Drive. The event is in partnership with American Grease and Septic, as well as the city engineer's office.

The service is free for residential city and county customers.

Cooking oils should never be placed down the drain, nor should they be flushed down a toilet, the utility reminds home chefs this holiday season. It can results in clogs in pipes inside your home and lead to backups in the city's sewer system.

Fats, oils and grease should also not be dumped on the ground as it is bad for the environment.

"When residents participate in handling their used grease responsibly, not only do they keep it from causing expensive sewer overflows, they are contributing to a true recycling process that supports our transportation and commerce industry," Chris Musack, president of American Grease and Septic said. "This used grease is fuel that keeps our trucks on the roads and our stores stocked."

Drop off will take place in the parking lot between the pump station and the downtown skatepark. The entrance to the parking lot is located across from Shawnee Drive at Veterans Memorial Parkway.

Acceptable oils and grease are only those used for cooking such as canola, corn, olive, peanut, sunflower and sesame oils, as well as lard and meat drippings. Petroleum oil waste is not allowed.
