The star on this U.S. Geological Survey map shows the approximate epicenter of a 4.6-magnitude earthquake on Hawaii island late Tuesday night.
A magnitude-4.6 earthquake struck the southern flank of Kilauea volcano just before midnight Tuesday.
Scientists with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the moderate quake hit at 11:49 p.m. and was centered about 9 miles south-southeast of Fern Forest at a depth of 3 miles below sea level.
The quake did not generate a tsunami according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu.
"The earthquake had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes," scientists said in a U.S. Geological Survey news release. "The event followed the end of episode 37 lava fountaining on Kilauea by 10 minutes, but does not appear directly related to the eruption."
They said that most earthquakes in this area are caused by movement of the south flank of Kilauea.
No damage to buildings or infrastructure was expected based on the quake's intensity, HVO geologists said.
The USGS' self-reported "Did you feel it?" online survey for the earthquake recorded several hundred responses from Hawaii island, with the most coming from Hilo.
