Texas Wine: The New Sweet Spot Between Napa Boldness and European Mildness

If you are looking for a wine that is not too bold like Californian wines or too mild like European wines, you'll find that Texas wines are just right. The good news is Texas vineyards are less than a day's drive away.

Even though we are wrapping up Texas Wine Month, it is always a great time to visit the Hill Country. The Hill Country region around Fredericksburg, Burnet, and Marble Falls has family-owned wineries that serve bold Texas reds, crisp whites, and everything in between.

Popular wineries to visit in the Hill Country include Fall Creek Vineyards (Tow, TX), Spicewood Vineyards (Spicewood), and Perissos Vineyards (Burnet, TX). You will find beautiful wine with beautiful views in the Texas countryside. Bring your appetite for live music, and find yourself a relaxing patio for your next getaway.

Named after Fall Creek Falls, Fall Creek Vineyards in Tow, Texas was founded by Ed and Susan Auler, Texas cattle ranchers who discovered a passion for wine during a trip to France to visit ranches. While in France, the Texas couple noticed the similarities in climate and terrain. The winery focuses on varietals like Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Grenache, and Tempranillo.

When Ron Yates bought the Spicewood, Texas vineyard in 2007, he combined his Texas family's heritage with a love for Spanish wines in the vineyards of Ribera del Duero. The vineyard now has thirty-two acres planted on-site, growing several varietals including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Tempranillo.

The seeds for the idea of a vineyard were planted when a couple with a homebuilding business was asked to make a very specific wine cellar for a client. The Martins eventually planted six grapevines at various locations and found that the grapes that performed the best were grown in granite gravel soil in Burnet, Texas. The rest is history.

Texas wines are no longer space fillers on a wine list. Vineyards now are winning awards for their Tempranillos, Viogniers, and blends that can stand next to the likes of California or even European wines.
