Following Republicans' heavy election defeats on Tuesday, President Donald Trump responded to voters' growing concerns by insisting that the economy is currently experiencing a golden age.
As hard evidence, he pointed to the cost of Walmart's Thanksgiving meal plan, which is about 25 percent cheaper this year than last year.
Grocery prices are down, and Walmart just announced that the cost of its standard Thanksgiving meal is the highest it's ever been, Trump said in a speech Wednesday at the American Business Forum, adding: It's 25% lower than it was a year ago. It's a big problem.
Trump is right, but the 2025 Thanksgiving package is also smaller than the 2024 package.
This year's bundle, at less than $40, contains 23 items; last year, there were 29. This year, missing items include onions, celery, sweet potatoes, chicken broth, poultry seasoning, muffin mix, marshmallows, whipped topping and pecan pie.
This year's meal comes with standard rolls and fresh cranberries, which are currently less expensive at Walmart than the sweet Hawaiian rolls and cranberry sauce from last year's edition.
The 2025 meal also includes just one can of cream of mushroom soup, compared to two in 2024.
Walmart made a few additions to its new packaging, including a double pack of turkey stuffing, baby carrots, and three boxes of mac and cheese. Last year, Walmart included ingredients for making stuffing from scratch.
This year, Walmart is raising the bar even higher by offering the most affordable Christmas meal yet, Walmart said in a release. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while Walmart declined to comment.
Since his speech on Wednesday, the president has publicly referenced the Walmart deal at least three more times. That evening, Trump posted on Truth Social that Republicans needed to start promoting Walmart's Thanksgiving deal.
