GEORGE TOWN: The telecommunications manhole cover that sank along Jalan Larut on Wednesday (Oct 22) afternoon has been replaced.
Penang Island City Council councillor Tan Soo Siang said the new cover was installed early on Thursday (Oct 23).
He said the telecommunications company carried out the replacement work under local authority supervision.
"It was replaced in less than 24 hours after the incident was reported," he said.
"Normally a new cover would only be available within a week, but due to the emergency, it was obtained yesterday and installed early this morning," added Tan.
He said plastic barriers were placed at the site as a temporary safety measure and that the MBPP removed the barriers after the replacement was completed.
"The situation is now safe and the area can be used by road users without obstruction," he said.
"MBPP will continue to monitor the location to ensure the new cover remains in good condition and does not endanger users," added Tan.
Tan reminded the public to drive cautiously in rain and to report any damage or potholes promptly.
Earlier, a telecommunications manhole cover was reported to have sunk due to a decayed cover structure.
The incident raised concern among road users and caused congestion during rainy conditions and the evening rush hour.
The sunken manhole cover was in the middle of the main lane, forcing drivers to slow down.
