Now is the time a massive surge of humanitarian aid is needed in Gaza. Continuing our support for Israel's right to defend itself is one thing, but continuing to support what we're witnessing in the eyes of starving Palestinian children is quite another. The latter is de facto genocide, just as surely as the horror Allied troops witnessed in those starving figures they found 80 years ago in Nazi concentration camps.
President Donald Trump deserves his share of credit for Hamas releasing American hostage Edan Alexander and for trying some novel approaches toward peace in the region. But now, with Hamas seriously weakened, wouldn't it be great if Trump could also leverage the immediate lifting of Benjamin Netanyahu's blockade of humanitarian relief supplies into Gaza, and the softening of Netanyahu's insistence on a total military solution alone?
Without some real concern for the Gazan people caught in the middle, and their participation in shaping a viable post-Hamas future, there will be no peace and security. Because peace also requires concern for justice and re-establishing a measure of goodwill. Exactly the kind of soft power that is so desperately needed right now.
