Odisha governor advocates for electric vehicles and sustainable practices to combat pollution | Bhubaneswar News - The Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Odisha governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Monday urged people to embrace electric vehicles (EVs) in the state's rapidly expanding urban areas for a greener future. Speaking at the 42nd Foundation Day of Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) here, the governor emphasised the critical role of EVs in reducing pollution and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. He highlighted the successful transition of the Raj Bhavan's official fleet to electric vehicles, which has significantly reduced its carbon footprint. This move serves as a model for others to follow, demonstrating the tangible benefits of adopting sustainable practices. In addition to promoting EVs, the governor encouraged the installation of rooftop solar systems. He noted that these systems not only cut electricity costs but also support clean energy initiatives, allowing residents to take advantage of govt subsidies. The governor also called on citizens and students to participate in the state's ambitious plantation drive, set to commence on Sept 17. The initiative aims to plant 75 lakh saplings across Odisha, contributing to the state's environmental conservation efforts.Addressing the broader issue of pollution, Kambhampati described it as a severe threat to health, livelihoods, and future generations. He urged the public to reduce plastic use, manage e-waste, conserve water, plant trees, and adopt renewable energy sources. He also encouraged the OSPCB to set bold goals for the next decade, focusing on green technologies, zero-waste industries, youth engagement, and the use of digital tools for environmental monitoring. The event was attended by prominent figures, including chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, additional chief secretary Satyabrata Sahu, and other officials from the forest department, underscoring the state's commitment to environmental sustainability.
