Newcastle player ratings as £55m signing slumps to 5/10 and Sven Botman struggles in Brighton loss | Chronicle Live

Newcastle United let it slip at the Amex Stadium to continue their horrendous run at the Amex Stadium.

Despite having the option of fresh legs, Eddie Howe opted to field Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, and Bruno Guimaraes, who came into the game on the back of international travel.

Newcastle failed to manage a single shot on target in the first half, and the service to 6ft 6in Nick Woltemade was questionable. After wasting a good chance carved out for Bruno, there was an air of inevitability when Brighton took the lead.

The opening goal from Danny Welbeck was a poor goal to concede from a team point of view as Woltemade failed to put any pressure on Lewis Dunk before the ball was rolled through midfield and Georginio Rutter's pass split Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman before the ex-England man dinked it over Nick Pope.

Despite Nick Woltemade's brilliant back-heel to level the game up with 14 minutes left, Newcastle leaked a second when Welbeck was left unmarked to sweep home the winner.

On hand to keep Newcastle in it with some key stops.

Kieran Trippier 7

Tried to keep things moving and had a hand in the equaliser.

Malick Thiaw 6

Some crucial interventions but left standing on two goals.

Sven Botman 5

Watched on as Welbeck scored twice. Not at the races.

Dan Burn 7

Stepped up and looked the strongest of all the international stars on show.

Joelinton 6

Looked tired but in fairness his body clock was probably telling him it was closer to midnight.

Left on after a flat first half. Played a huge part in the equaliser but then switched off for Welbeck winner.

Anthony Gordon 7

Gave everything in the tank. Some dangerous moments before taking a rest.

Anthony Elanga 5

A bit of a horror show in truth. Just 20 touches and one poor overhit cross. Looks drained of confidence.

Nick Woltemade 8

A disappointing first half, but came alive when the service was right. Making a mockery of his £69m fee.

Caused problems but blazed two chances high and wide.

Coming back after injury and not deemed fit enough to start.
