From discipline and simplicity to resilience and family values, the Aditya Birla Group chairman's candid conversation on KBC struck an emotional chord.
A recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati offered viewers far more than nail-biting questions and rising prize money. In a rare and heartfelt television appearance, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, took the hot seat opposite Amitabh Bachchan and shared deeply personal anecdotes that seamlessly blended leadership wisdom with human values. Playing for the charitable organisation Jaipur Foot, which has helped over 2.5 million people with artificial limbs, Birla's conversation stood out for its sincerity, humility and emotional depth.

One of the most impactful moments came when Birla spoke about education and discipline, recalling a defining decision taken by his father, the late Aditya Birla. Despite wanting to pursue an MBA after graduation, Birla was firmly told that he must first qualify as a Chartered Accountant. His father made it clear that without earning the CA degree, there would be no place for him in the office. Even an attempt to seek support from his grandfather, B.K. Birla, led to the same response -- underscoring a family belief that credibility and hard work cannot be compromised.
The episode also highlighted the Birla family's respect for legacy and relationships. Amitabh Bachchan shared a fond memory of visiting the Birla residence in Kolkata, where B.K. Birla showed him a guest book carrying the signature of Bachchan's father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, from the 1950s. In a touching gesture, B.K. Birla asked Amitabh to sign next to his father's name, a moment that reflected how the family values sentiment and history over material wealth.
Speaking about taking over the business at just 28 after his father's untimely demise, Birla admitted to feeling overwhelmed by fear and responsibility. On KBC, he explained how education, family values and faith helped him stay steady during challenging times. Quoting a Sanskrit shloka that stresses patience and consistency, he emphasised that lasting success is built gradually, not overnight.
Another story that resonated strongly was about simplicity. Birla recalled opening his grandfather's cupboard after his passing and finding only a handful of clothes and a single watch -- remarkable for someone who led a vast textile empire. The anecdote served as a reminder that simple living and disciplined thinking were central to the family's philosophy.
The episode also featured warm family moments, with Birla's children and wife sharing anecdotes that revealed his protective and caring side. From frequent check-in calls to bonding over music and painting, the personal stories added charm and relatability. Birla even sang a few lines from a classic song at his daughter's request, surprising the audience.
Admitting that he prepared intensely and was nervous about appearing in front of Amitabh Bachchan -- whom he described as a father figure -- Birla's KBC appearance ultimately became a masterclass in leadership, values and humility, leaving a lasting impression on viewers.
