Batesburg-Leesville wins 2A state baseball championship over Philip Simmons

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, SC. (WRDW/WAGT) - For the first time in since 1949, Batesburg-Leesville's baseball team has won a state championship.

A gutsy performance in game two on Tuesday night gave Batesburg life, forcing a game three against Philip Simmons.

The Panthers and the Iron Horses each hungry for a state championship, but Batesburg-Leesville has waited more than a long time for this moment.

In the second inning, Braydon Hallman put the Panthers up (5-2) with a 2RBI double into deep left.

Down to the bottom of the sixth, the boys in purple still held a three-run advantage (6-3), right before Landon Soper hit an RBI single that would tack on an insurance run for Batesburg.

The Panthers would go on to maintain their lead, taking down Philip Simmons (8-5), capturing the program's first ever SCHSL 2A State Championship trophy.
