SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- West Valley's Callie Orcutt qualified as an All-American and helped the Sun City Harriers finish second as a team in the 13-14-year-old girls race at the USA Track and Field national junior Olympic cross country championships last weekend.
Orcutt completed the 4K course in 15:31 to finish 25th and earn All-American honors, and Selah's Sadie Durkee also competed for a team also featuring runners from north central Washington. Cottonwood Elementary fourth-grader Paige Huibregtse placed 76th in the 9-10-year-old girls race with a 3K time of 13:24.

Birrueta wins weekly awardThe Major Arena Soccer League named former Davis standout Luis Birrueta goalkeeper of the week after he won his first two games as the Tacoma Stars' top keeper last weekend.
Birrueta recorded six saves in a 3-2 win on Saturday and followed that up by saving 15 of 21 shots to beat the Baltimore Blast a second time by a score of 8-6. The former CBBN player of the year won the West Coast Goalkeeper of the Year award for his efforts with the Tacoma Stars Reserves while filling in as needed for the Stars' MASL team.

Russell an academic All-AmericanEast Valley graduate Jacob Russell joined nine other players on the NAIA academic All-America second team, announced Tuesday morning.
The sophomore defender anchored an Eastern Oregon back line that produced 10 shutouts on the way to the program's first Cascade Collegiate Conference title and an unbeaten regular season before a pair of shootout losses. Russell holds a 3.93 GPA in Multidisciplinary Studies.
COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELDCWU athletes honoredThe GNAC named the Central Washington women's track and field team its team of the week and gave two Wildcats athlete of the week awards on Monday.
Central's women turned in several strong performances at the Spokane Invitational, highlighted by wins for defending NCAA Division II champion Emy Ntekpere in the triple jump and Ashlyn Nielsen in the 200 meters. Nielsen won the athlete of the week award after she also qualified fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.57 seconds, good for sixth-fastest on the GNAC indoor all-time list.
David Brown also won the weekly award by finishing first among Division II athletes and third overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.03, only .02 seconds off the GNAC record. Fellow Central Washington football player and former Ellensburg state champion Colton Magruder won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.77 seconds.
