(FOX40.COM) -- A fatal crash in Stanislaus County claimed the lives of four people Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Around 9:25 a.m., CHP responded to reports of a crash on SR-165 at Greenway Avenue. Emergency first responders said they found two vehicles with major collision damage -- a 2008 Infinity Sedan and a 2023 Jeep SUV.
A 22-year-old Modesto man was driving the Infiniti northbound on SR-165, approaching Greenway Avenue at a "high rate of speed," according to police. At the same time, a 54-year-old Turlock man was driving the Jeep westbound on Greenway Avenue, stopped at the stop sign at State Route 165.
The Jeep driver entered the intersection directly in front of the Infiniti, according to CHP. The front of the Infiniti struck the left side of the Jeep. The Infiniti driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not clear if drugs or alcohol were involved.
Police said there were four other passengers inside of the Jeep. One of them, a 45-year-old woman who was in the front passenger seat, was also pronounced dead at the scene. Another, a 16-year-old girl who was in the left rear passenger seat, was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Two other teenagers, 19 and 16, were taken to the hospital with major injuries.
Caltrans issued a traffic alert about the roadways being closed in both directions between Greenway Avenue and Simmons Road. Officials said there is no estimated time of reopening and drivers should avoid taking that route.
