NEC Endorses Renewed Hope Development Plan 2026-2030, Sets Target of $1 Trillion Economy by 2030 - TV360 Nigeria

The National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed the framework for the Renewed Hope Development Plan (2026-2030), a five-year roadmap designed to consolidate ongoing reforms and propel Nigeria toward achieving a $1 trillion economy by the end of the decade.

The approval was the highlight of NEC's 151st meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, and held on Thursday at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In his remarks, Shettima described the new plan as a "critical bridge" between lessons learnt under the expiring National Development Plan (2021-2025) and the ambitions of Nigeria Agenda 2050.

"This, to us, is no ordinary transition. It is the bridge between lessons learnt and ambitions pursued," Shettima said. "The Renewed Hope Plan will consolidate reforms, deepen policy continuity, and align our medium-term strategies with Nigeria's long-term vision. It is a practical roadmap towards a $1 trillion economy by 2030."

The Vice President stressed that the plan would be participatory rather than top-down, engaging state and local governments, the private sector, civil society, labour, youth, and traditional institutions.

Polio Immunisation and Health Priorities

NEC also directed the Accountant General of the Federation to expedite the release of funds for the next round of the national polio immunisation campaign, underscoring the importance of timely financing and surveillance in sustaining Nigeria's gains against the disease.

Briefing journalists, Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya said Nigeria had recorded significant progress in reducing vaccine-derived polio cases -- from 78 in 2024 to 42 so far in 2025 -- though Sokoto State remains the epicentre with 13 of the 23 reported cases.

He announced that the next vaccination round will run from September 11-14 across 11 high-risk states, followed by a nationwide integrated campaign in October targeting children aged 0-14.

Yahaya added that complementary health services, including nutritional supplements for pregnant women and malaria prevention kits, were being integrated to boost community acceptance.

Economic Updates and Next Steps

The Accountant General of the Federation, Shamusideen Ogunjimi, presented account balances as follows: Excess Crude Account - $535,823.39; Stabilisation Account - ₦78.45 billion; and Natural Resources Account - ₦106.73 billion.

He confirmed that preparations for the Renewed Hope Development Plan (2026-2030) will begin in September, with three governance structures -- the National Steering Committee, Central Working Group, and Technical Working Groups -- set to oversee its formulation.

The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning will lead the process, ensuring that the 2026 national budget is derived from the new plan, which is expected to be launched by President Tinubu before the end of the year.

Shettima further disclosed that the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has scaled up local production of solar-powered irrigation pumps to cut energy costs for farmers, expand dry-season farming, and reinforce food security.

"Distinguished colleagues, you have made sure that this council is not a stage for applause," Shettima said. "You are the reason it is a workshop for solutions. Let this 151st meeting echo as a continuation of our covenant -- from rhetoric to result."
