Police: Waterbury patrol cops spot car seen at larcenies statewide, nab suspects after tussle

WATERBURY -- Friday, police arrested two suspects in connection with multiple larcenies around the state.

On Dec. 4, about 3:15 p.m., officers were patrolling Cherry Street when they saw a blue 2011 Hyundai Accent described as present at those larcenies statewide. They identified the driver, John Richard, 56, of Shelton, as having an active felony warrant out of Seymour, police said.

As one officer was placing Richard into the cruiser, the passenger, Henry Ortiz, 25, of Waterbury, hopped in the front seat and threw the car into reverse, attempting to flee. The car door struck one of the officers, causing him to fall to the sidewalk and his head, police said.

After a brief struggle, the second officer stopped the vehicle and both officers took Ortiz into custody. Before they did, Ortiz also struck a nearby vehicle with the Hyundai.

Ortiz was charged with unsafe backing, second degree breach of peace, assault on a police officer, first degree reckless endangerment, driving with a suspended license, two counts of interfering with an officer, and evading responsibility resulting in an injury.

Ortiz had several active warrants and is in the custody of the Connecticut Department of Correction on $256,000 bond.

Richard was released to Seymour Police Department and served with a felony warrant for larceny.
